• The Language Of Flowers

    By Claire Walker

The language of flowers has been around for centuries. Writings from ancient Greece, Rome, Egypt and China all include flower and plant symbolism. These meanings were probably passed orally through a largely illiterate audience.

The Victorian Age seemed to have been the heyday of flower symbolism. Intimate emotions could be conveyed with flowers. Emotions that the delicate sensibilities of the time did not permit to be said aloud. During this time many small colourful handbooks were produced to help guide the giver and receiver as to the meanings.

Today flowers are still an important part of our weddings, funerals, holidays and ceremonies although we may not know their true meaning. Wedding bouquets often include ivy to symbolise fidelity. If you are looking for new ways of expressing yourself to your family and friends, this list is sure to help you.
